Santorini is mostly built on the top of a steep cliff. There are basically four ways to get to the top. 1) walk up a steep set of stairs which takes about an hour and is quite treacherous 2) ride a donkey up those steps (which is also a bit treacherous 3) take the cable cars which can have a very long ling and 4) take a boat to the other side of the island which can be quite pricey. We chose the cable cars and were fortunate as we were some of the first to do so and had absolutely no line. It helped that we were the first of five cruise ships and over 10,000 people to arrive that day. The cable cars hold about 24 people each - just do the math.
